Rewriting the Menopause Narrative: Empowering Women Through Knowledge and Movement
For too long, we've gotten menopause wrong. Here's what women actually need to know.
Menopause hasn't always gotten the best reputation. For decades, it's been clouded by misunderstanding, stigma, and fear. Historically, the picture was even bleaker. Until the early 1900s, little was known about menopause, and in the late 1800s, women experiencing symptoms were often labeled "insane."
Fast forward to today, and although we've made progress, misinformation still dominates the conversation. Many women entering peri- or post-menopause admit they have little understanding of what's actually happening in their bodies. It's not something most of us were taught in school, and it's certainly not something we're prepared for.
Without proper education or support, women navigate this transition alone, turning to unreliable sources, social media fads, or advice from others who are just as uncertain. Much of what's shared in popular media continues to paint menopause in a negative light, as something to "fix" or "fight," rather than a natural phase of womanhood.
As a fitness professional, this frustrates me deeply.
I see the fallout every day: women feeling defeated, confused, and betrayed by their bodies. They come to me saying:
"But I was told I should do this..."
"I heard I need to burn more calories..."
"I can't lift heavy or I'll get bulky..."
These beliefs stem from decades of messaging that women should be small, dainty, and constantly striving to take up less space. It's harmful. It's wrong. And we're failing women by reinforcing insecurities during an already challenging transition.
I know this may not mean much coming from someone who hasn't personally experienced menopause. But my intention comes from genuine care and respect. I've spent years researching, learning from experts, and working with women navigating this phase because you deserve to feel seen, understood, and empowered, not dismissed or left confused.
I also have a rare and wonderful friendship with my mom, who's shared her raw experience with me and allowed me to be part of her journey. Seeing her navigate menopause with honesty and resilience has deepened my appreciation for what women go through and inspired me to help others.
Let's be clear: your body isn't failing you. It's simply entering a new phase that deserves a smarter approach to training and care.
Menopause is not the end of vitality, strength, or athleticism. It's a new beginning that deserves understanding, not apprehension. We need to stop demonizing this natural transition and start sharing the truth and the science, not the scare tactics.
Understanding What's Really Happening
Let's clear up one of the biggest misconceptions: "menopause" isn't a years-long event. It's actually one day.
Here's how it works:
Perimenopause is the transition phase leading up to menopause. During this time, estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate unpredictably, leading to symptoms like hot flashes, sleep disturbances, and mood changes.
Menopause is defined as the final day of your last menstrual period, marking the official end of your reproductive years.
Post-menopause is everything after that day. It's a biological state for the rest of your life, where estrogen and progesterone levels remain low and stable.
Understanding these distinctions matters because it helps you make informed decisions about your health, fitness, and overall well-being.
Reframing Fitness and Strength for the Peri/Post-Menopausal Woman
It's time to rewrite the narrative.
You don't need to restrict calories, live on a treadmill, or stick to light weights and Pilates (unless you enjoy those things!). What you need is a science-backed, individualized approach that supports your changing physiology, one that emphasizes strength training, proper recovery, and balanced nutrition.
You are an athlete. Whether you're a lifelong mover or rediscovering your strength now, your body is capable of incredible adaptation. The right training plan can help you build muscle, improve bone density, support heart health, and feel confident in your skin again.
My goal is to be part of that support system, to help you navigate this phase with clarity, confidence, and compassion. Together, we can shift the conversation from fear and restriction to empowerment and growth.
Menopause is not a breakdown. It's a transition. And with the right knowledge and approach, it can be one of the most powerful times in your life.
